From the Big Bang to the Gailtal - 500 million years of earth history in the Carnic region

Book by Prof. Dr. Hans P. Schönlaub

Mosaic stones of life .......

The Carnic region in the south of Austria has more to offer than just beautiful scenery, a friendly population and consistent fine weather within sight of the Adriatic Sea.

This illustrated nature guide is dedicated to the treasures of the past, which abound in the Carnic region and date back to an age of almost 500 million years. From the eyes of the interested hiker, the silent testimonies of times long past are awakened to new life, seemingly dead rock begins to speak, and an "action"-rich dramatic spectacle of the earth's history unfolds before the visitor - becoming and decaying, standstill and progress in nature, high points and defeats - experienced and written down in 5 nature trails with a total of 83 rock description boards, panorama boards, geologically interesting individual points, maps and exhibitions in an area of about 500 km².

Hans Peter Schönlaub, a geologist at the Federal Geological Institute in Vienna and a lecturer at Austrian universities who has been involved in the geological research of the Carnic region for years, has retold the natural history of this area for the interested visitor in a generally understandable form and recorded it here in detail in texts, drawings and photos.
